“WELL FUCK”.. First thought after hitting the ground Friday afternoon.

Friday for those of you who don’t work on a commission or quota based pay per month was the last day of the month. The company I work for here in Austin Tx was making a big push to hit our goal and I happened to have the file that would hit it. Early in the morning my manager came over and said if I got that file done I could go home for the day. We’ll I’ll be damned come 2:30pm Friday I got it. 5 minutes later I was sliding across the liquid hot magma we call Texas roads.

Kinja'd!!!

Luck have it a week before the wreck I bought a brand new Vortex Bell helmet which most likely saved my life. I know Friday and Saturday were foggy to say the least.

But lets get down to what we all want to know and that’s why I wrecked. You see I live on the west side of town and between my office and my home is a limestone quarry . Owned by Ranger Excavating and they mine lime stone. Scientific FUCK TONS of lime stone. Each day they water down the road to wash off all the lime stone dust that builds up. Well Friday around 2:30 the water truck must have been eating lunch and or filling up on water when I came by. As I started to enter the right hand turn the front tire slipped out from under the bike (keep in mind I ride up and down this road to and from work everyday and understand that it can be sketchy) As with most wrecks it happened very quickly and was all over before I knew it. However when I went down the bike landed on top of my right leg. Burning the piss out of my inner calf and giving me some grown man road rash on my knee and right side of my calf. The bike is a little banged up and while I like to think the best part of owning a grom would be the 100mpg I get regularly it’s not. The best part about owning a grom is when it’s damaged it won’t cost much to fix. For a brand new :

Muffler , Muffler shield , rear sets , fairings , turn signal , bar end , mirror, and front fender

The cost was only $595 !!!

when you consider that normal bikes fairings are anywhere from 650-1200 bucks for a complete set I made out like a bandit. The second good thing about a grom is when you pass a rock quarry who hasn’t watered the road and you fall they’ll most likely cover your measly damages. I called the quarry and they gave me the info to file a claim. Obviously with most insurance claims it’s a pain in the ass but I just want to be whole again and I feel that they will end up paying for the damages.

moving forward I’ll be taking the long way to and from work to avoid this situation again. While I’d usually beat myself up inside for wrecking the bike I’m confident when I say there’s really nothing I could do. Sometimes it just sucks to suck.

TIL you can wreck a Grom. In all seriousness though, glad to hear you’re OK. Going to have to pick up some limestone-friendly tires!

That sucks to hear, glad you’re ok.

This sounds similar to the slide a took a few years ago. Came around a blind right curve (maybe a little fast) right into a scattering of gravel next to where they were adding new sidewalk. Tire slid, I slid, but thankfully it was minor. My house keys ended up leaving my jeans through a new whole the created all their own, and I ground through the palms of my gloves. Thankfully I was wearing a heavy jacket, as I hit the ground going about 40pmh.

For me, the accessories took the brunt of it. My hard side case exploded all over the road, and lost highway pegs and a brake lever. Other than that, there were a few minor can and fork scratches. No paint lost.

Good luck with the Grom going forward, I think those little guys look awesome!

Did you pursue the city for the damages ?

The part I left out is that the limestone on the road is crushed limestone so it’s like a fine dust that covers the entire road. When they water the road down although it’s now a wet road it’s better than a dusty one.

No. Honestly, the thought never crossed my mind. It was my fault, I should have been a better rider.

I could have potentially ridden straight up at 2 mph through the entire area but it shouldn’t be left up to me when there is no construction going on just daily operation of a mine.
